Logo for Engineering Expo 2007

Engineering Expo is a non-profit student organization at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Our mission for Expo 2007 is to stimulate interest in engineering by providing opportunities to explore interactive exhibits and innovations of industry and the University.

What is Engineering Expo?

All of the exhibits and events for Expo have now been finalized. Download this copy of the Expo 2007 Program to read about all of the exhibits, presentations, and competitions at Expo! (PDF, 2.22 MB)

The best way to get an idea of what Engineering Expo is like is by watching this video from Expo 2005. This video is closed captioned, too, and you can read about using the closed captions here. Here are the links for the video or the transcript:

Exhibits & Events

Keynote Speaker: Our keynote speech will be given by Matthew Melis from NASA at 5:00p on Thursday, April 19th. Matt Melis received both a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Engineering Mechanics from Michigan State University. He has worked at the Glenn Research Center for twenty five years. His primary area of focus is in advanced finite element modeling and analysis methods including nonlinear and dynamic impact loading. His research is being used to predict ballistic impact response of jet engine fan containment concepts subjected to fan blade and debris strikes in support of national aviation safety initiatives. Since the tragedy of Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003, Matt has been dedicated full time to working on the Columbia Accident Investigation, and for the Space Shuttle Program in the area of debris impact assessment.

Mr Melis will be presenting: The Columbia Accident Investigation and Returning NASA’s Space Shuttle to Flight

On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart during reentry, resulting in loss of the vehicle and its seven crewmembers. For the next several months, an extensive investigation of the accident ensued involving a nationwide team of experts from NASA, industry, and academia, spanning dozens of technical disciplines.

Mr. Melis will provide a look into the inner workings of the Space Shuttle and a behind the scenes perspective on the impact analysis and testing done for the Columbia Accident Investigation and NASA's Return to Flight programs. In addition, highlights from recent Shuttle missions are presented.

Science is Fun: Experience the exciting world of chemistry with Professor Shakashiri. This presentation will dive right into the periodic table with colorful demonstrations and exciting experiments. See Science is Fun at 11:00 and 1:00 every day of Expo. Shows last one hour and will be in 1800 Engineering Hall, with the exception of the 11:00 show on Saturday, which will be in 1610 Engineering Hall.

Wonders of Physics: Explore the many facets of the physical world with Professor Sprott. This presentation will investigate electricity, light, magnetism, and much more through demonstrations and experiments. The Wonders of Physics will be presented at 11:00 and 1:00 every day of Expo in 1106 Mechanical Engineering Building.

Competitions

If you are interested in participating in a competition event at Expo, you can find out more information about all of the competitions at Expo here. If you wish to register for more than one competition, fill out the registration form, found on that competitions info page, for each of the competition events you wish to register for. By registering, you are reserving a spot to compete at Expo. Registration for all events must be finalized by April 12. Please contact Forrest Woolworth with all of your competition related questions and inquiries.

Maps and Parking

Public parking is available for $8/day (or $5 after 11:30) in Lot 17 on the engineering campus on Thursday and Friday, or for $5 on Saturday. Free parking is available on Saturday in Lot 60 (click to see a map) near the UW-Hospital, and a free shuttle bus will be provided for transportation to the engineering campus every 15 minutes.

School Parking: School buses will drop students off on the east side of Breese Terrace. Drivers will then be given further instructions to park in designated lots near the UW-Hospital.
